Jewish Issues

Examining Halacha,Jewish Issues and Secular Law

Judaism is not just a set of beliefs about G-d, man and the universe. Judaism is a comprehensive way of life, filled with rules and practices that affect every aspect of life: what you do when you wake up in the morning, what you can and cannot eat, what you can and cannot wear, how to groom yourself, how to conduct business, who you can marry, how to observe the holidays and Shabbat, and perhaps most important, how to treat G-d, other people, and animals. This set of rules and practices is known as halakhah.

taking care of one another

There is a wonderful story about a man who leaves the world and arrives at the pearly gates, where he is given a preview of heaven and hell. Both scenarios have the exact same setting: people sitting around a huge pot of stew, each holding a wooden spoon with a very long handle. In hell, he sees emaciated people trying to feed themselves, but try as they might, they're not able to get the food into their mouths using the cumbersome spoons.

In heaven, on the other hand, the people look healthy, with nice, rosy complexions. The difference is that in heaven, they're feeding each other using their long spoons. They're sharing, because they understand that the only way they can eat, have the real fulfillment and sustenance that they need, is by taking care of one another.

What is hell? Hell is not having the ability to share with others.

have a peacefull shabbat

Why is it so difficult to receive a compliment? Why is it so difficult to open up and allow real love to come in?

Creating a circuitry of Light requires three things: giving, receiving, and restriction. Many of us have difficulty with the receiving part. We're so accustomed to not trusting anyone. We're so accustomed to going without and having people withhold from us. We expect disappointment; we always seem to be waiting for the other shoe to drop. It's become the human condition to spend our time waiting for that excitement and fulfillment to disappear.

Today, let your guard down. The Light is knocking, it wants to come in. Have some faith in people. Have some faith in yourself. Let the love in. Let the Light in.

Doesn't that feel good?

Appreciate

Today, appreciate the fact you are sitting there reading these words. Appreciate the fact that you have another day to live and to burn the fat from your soul. Appreciate the people who come in your life – good and bad. Appreciate. Appreciate. Appreciate.

Why was I born?
What's the meaning of my life?
Why am I me?

When we are kids, we often think about these things. But as life comes faster and harder, we tend to put these questions aside in order to deal with the important matters of life. Who has time for such navel gazing?

Then one day, tragedy strikes or we look in the mirror and see our grandfather staring back at us and we wonder, "What did I live for? Where did my life go? What good did I do?"

Let's not wait until it's too late to change our fate. Let today be the day we resume asking the questions worth asking. If we are already asking them, then let's ask louder.

Why was I born?
What's the meaning of my life?
Why am I me?
